Imagine is back with his sophomore effort, Beyond Clouds. The album is a great step forward in not only honing his sound, but in reaching new depths with his songwriting as well. With appearances from a great deal of talent both behind and in front of the microphone, Beyond Clouds is a statement for the masses saying Imagine is here and definitely will not be silenced!

EVENT: 12/30/18 Architectural Legacy Walking Tours

Saturday, December 30th 10:00 a.m. & 1:00 p.m.Members $15, Non-Members $20 /// Buy Tickets

The Blacker House

The Hillcrest Neighborhood tour invites tour goers to discover one of Pasadena's most beautiful neighborhoods with a variety of historic architectural styles. The Oak Knoll subdivision, of which
Hillcrest is part, was intended to rival the wealthy neighborhoods of Orange Grove and the "West Side" (San Rafael and Linda Vista), so many of the estate size lots were intended for custom home development. Showcased on the tour are numerous grand estate mansions along with Craftsman homes such as the Freeman House designed by architects Arthur and Alfred Heineman and the Culbertson House and Blacker House both designed by Charles and Henry Greene.

Civic Center District and Fountains Walking Tour

The Pasadena Civic Center tour provides local residents and visitors with a unique look at the area's intriguing architectural history. Our Civic Center is a product of the "City Beautiful" Movement led by renowned planner Daniel Burnham, which began at the 1893 World Columbia Exposition in
Chicago. Edward H. Bennett, protégé of Burnham, created Pasadena's 1925 plan. In May 2012, the American Planning Association awarded the National Planning Landmark Award to the Bennett Plan, recognizing the City's dedication to its implementation over the years. There will be anecdotes of individuals such as architect Julia Morgan, who designed the former YWCA building; George Ellery Hale, who was the driving force behind Civic Center's construction, and others, who helped to create and maintain the Mediterranean style of architecture within this beautiful civic core. Also seen on this tour are numerous fountains - some designed by notable Pasadena artists, architects, and landscape designers such as Ernest Batchelder, Myron Hunt and Ruth Shellhorn.

Jhantu Randall reviews "Beyond Clouds" album by IMAGINE

With a name like Imagine and a title of “Beyond Clouds,” I have to admit that my interest was definitely peaked but I really wasn't sure what to expect. This song could have been either transcendent or colluded, distorted and disconnected. With that being said, sonically, the production was very pleasing, but lyrically, I was bracing myself. After the initial shock of Imagine’s vocal tone, I began to fall into the words he was speaking and the feeling he was reflecting upon.

Starting with a sound that is a mixture of horns and drum patterns that leave you feeling vibrant, its the vocals of the artist himself who makes the biggest first impression. It may take a few listens to get used to his sound but once you do, you’ll really appreciate the attention to detail, especially in the aspects of wordplay and flow. A song to zone out to in a session, its arrangement has you running through your mind, contemplating random thoughts and connecting with the tale Imagination is weaving. Imagination. What a high bar to set for yourself as the name holds endless possibilities accompanied by quick consequences if you don’t manage to create an atmosphere. Judging off this song alone, Imagination not only lives but thrives within this world that exists for 4:03.

While it’s Imagination’s verse structure and rhyme schemes create a world it’s The Homegirl Monie’s voice that breathe the elements of life that give this track a whole new layer. Her chorus pulls together the struggles that's being rapped about by giving it a nurturing tone which makes the track more relatable towards the casual listener. The surprise comes as she spits in the final part of the song. A sharpness that cuts through with a poetic tone, a blunt delivery and a certain type of sincerity that leaves a lasting impression on the listener.

With just this track to base everything on, I will say my minds always looking for a way to escape at times. In those moments, it’s artists who are bold enough to create a full on movie score to accompany their rhymes that has a strong draw on me, personally. To create a world is bold, to truly pull it off? Very rare. This track does sound very promising and leaves one wondering if they can build upon this track and take the listener on a journey for a while? I’ll say that if theres truly no limits to the Imagination then let’s get ready to fly. If there’s something Beyond the Clouds, I’m eager to see it but am also preparing for a turbulent yet entertaining ride.

Pasadena may build overpass at Gold Line on California Blvd

By STEVE SCAUZILLO
Pasadenans have a love-hate relationship with the Gold Line.

They love the convenience of a train whisking them to Los Angeles from six stations throughout the Crown City. However, when the train emerges from its underground lair and crosses Del Mar Boulevard, California Boulevard and Glenarm Street at street level, the sentiments of motorists mired at the downed gates similarly take a turn.

In fact, those waiting three or more minutes or several signal cycles may curse the train as they jockey from lane to lane to find a quicker way to cross.

“As much as a I love the Gold Line, it certainly has bisected our city during rush hour,” Pasadena City Councilman Andy Wilson said. “It is part of the bigger narrative of city congestion.”

The Prodigal Child of Pasadena by Jhantu Randall

I met up with the current subject for this article, Bing Bing on a Saturday evening at Nate’s Chicken and Waffles in Seattle. Before I get too far ahead of myself, Bing Bing is the stage name of Michael Taylor, the man who brought me in and gave me an opportunity at ThaWilsonBlock Magazine. With that explanation stated up front, this article is the perfect test as I’ve covered artists, live performances, and entrepreneurs and this man is a culmination of all 3.

From creating a publication that promotes local artists and events that highlight the culture, to a podcast that gives listeners a chance to hear the voice of an unheard star before they make their mark, Hip Hop is the lifeblood that tells the hustlers’ story. It gives a voice to the voiceless, the underclass that's routinely propped up as pawns and then forced to carry the burden of feeling forgotten. It’s these precise circumstances that fuel an indescribable desire to rise above the position your were given, live the American Dream and experience creating the vision.

As we sat for a meeting, he broke down the numbers of the articles traction and other things that had to do with music in general. As this conversation carried on, I was invited to hear some of Bing Bing’s music which I admit I’d never really sat and listened to prior to this. In situations like this it’s best not to go into listenings with any sort of preconceived notions or expectations and just let your genuine reactions dictate your first impression as you begin to form an opinion. I won’t get into the songs I heard in that moment other than to say that Bing is definitely an emcee as opposed to just being a rapper. For him it’s more about a feeling and conveying a story as opposed to just being a dope spitter with a catalog of quotable’s.

With the release of Bing Bing’s mixtape entitled “Beautiful Struggle” I initially had my reservations. It holds the same name as Talib Kweli’s second solo studio album but the phrase itself is broad and I was curious to hear Bing’s interpretation of this concept. The opening track immediately hits with an aggressive tone and swift delivery in which you can sense his hunger carried in every bar. The album, and I call it that due to the sampling and music used to create a project which elevates the listener and gives them a flashback to the golden era that inspired many to write when they were younger, is filled with interludes from other artists and associates who give Bing a shoutout. It’s these bridges that reinforce the progress he’s made through his journey thus far. Like the album name itself, his use of Nas’ classic memory lane beat made me eager to hear a new story over a beat that demands the ability to tell a story that can describe a common grind while at the same time, still be unique the the artists baring it.

Being associated with a person who possesses this kind of drive only shows me that with the right outlook one can take a mere idea and create a foundation that allows others to build and link as they spread to a variety of venues in an ever expanding region. In the end, theres always multiple ways to tell your story with a lasting effect.

William Carey Campus to become EF Boarding School

McGavran Hall
In April, William Carey International University sold its fifteen-acre campus at 539 E. Howard St. to Education First (EF), a large private international education company. The new owner plans to establish an EF Academy International Boarding School at this location. On September 17, the City Council received information on EF's plans and responded very favorably, overall. Prior to the hearing, Pasadena Heritage submitted a letter to the Council expressing support for the project, as proposed at this early planning phase, and offered a few recommendations.

Pasadena Heritage considers it most fortunate that EF purchased the entire campus and will continue using it for educational purposes. We met twice this year with EF representatives and are pleased with their vision for the campus which contains several historic buildings that appear individually eligible for local Landmark designation, most notably McGavran Hall, a 1930 Spanish Colonial Revival educational building that faces E. Howard St. and features a clock tower. We are especially encouraged by EF's plans to retain and rehabilitate the historic buildings, some of which are deteriorating.

We understand that EF will demolish three existing buildings and replace them with a dormitory, and for safety reasons, enclose the campus with a perimeter fence. In our letter to the Council, which was shared with EF, we noted that the buildings proposed for demolition do not appear to be historic but urged further evaluation. We also recommended a fence design that respects the character of the campus and surrounding neighborhood and keeps the green spaces along Howard St. open to the public. The project will go through the City's review process, and we will provide updates as we learn more.

Pasadena Heritage Discover Madison House in 1976 Film!

This summer, Pasadena Heritage staff discovered that the Madison House, bequeathed to us by the Madison family and used as our offices, made an appearance in Goodbye, Norma Jean. This 1976 film by Larry Buchanan is based on the life of Marilyn Monroe, played by Mistella "Misty" Rowe. The film opens with a scene depicting the Madison House as a foster home, one of many that Monroe spent her
childhood in. Both the exterior and interior of the home are captured in the film, and Pasadena Heritage staff were amused by what has and has not changed since 1976! Many of the Madisons' possessions remain, as they were donated to us along with the home.

The Madison House has had a long history and many different owners, the Madisons being the last. It was originally designed by Harry
Ridgeway, one of Pasadena's first recognized professional architects, and built in 1883 by contractor J. S. Blick for $3,500. The original owners were James H. Cambell, Sr., a retiree, and Caroline "Carrie" Cambell. Both were prominent in the local temperance movement. Their son, James Cambell, Jr., lived in a Ridgeway-designed home next door, built at the same time.

(At the time of this writing, Goodbye, Norma Jean can be viewed on Amazon Prime. Please note that the film contains some nudity and violence and is only suitable for mature audiences.)

Future of Fuller Theological Seminary Remains Pending

The 1904 Behlow House, a contributor to the Ford Place Historic Distrct
In May, Fuller Theological Seminary announced the sale of its 13-acre Pasadena campus, its home since 1947, and said it plans to relocate to Pomona. The multidenominational evangelical graduate institution's campus includes the Ford Place Historic District, open space, and various institutional, multi-family residential, and office buildings.

We understand that Fuller has retained Los Angeles-based commercial real estate services and investment firm CBRE Group, Inc. to market the campus, which will be sold as various separate property groupings, and that the deadline for offers is October 26.

PODCAST: How Pasadena Failed Me As A Child In The Community

Mistah Wilson opens up about how his hometown of Pasadena, CA has ultimately failed him as an art community and also how it's pushed him to move out of the state. From foster care to the local music scene, Mistah Wilson, commonly known as Bing Bing, reflects on going from an ambitious kid growing up on Wilson Avenue to being written off by the constituents within his unique niche...local, native artists. This topic is NOT a 'complaint' but more of a untold truth.
